2015 diary entry – day one

spending new years eve in the kalahari was a new experience in so many ways.  the four of us set of early that afternoon. as we left our hometown i remembered that i left the childrens` medicine case at home, but felt a little relieved knowing that the farm was equipped with medicine if necessary.  late that afternoon as everyone got ready to go on a game drive, the fear-striken scream of my son ringed through my ears and what greeted me was not a friendly face.  his face and neck was covered in blood and i was filled with panic.  i had no idea what happened and thinking straight was difficult.  …as the peacock flew away its claw scratched dewalds` face and shoulder and the nail bored a hole in the flesh near his nose.

needless to say my new years’ eve was rather unusual but i have memories that will last forever and a story to tell.

that night just before the clock struck 12, dewald woke from his sleep and we connected.  i had to bath him at that hour and afterwards i had to bottle feed our newborn.  as i sat in bed with katryn in my arms and my hand nestled in dewalds`, i heard the others pop the champagne.  at that moment i felt so connected to my children, i felt cosy and warm inside, i felt important and worthy.  i realised that although children changes our lives in so many ways, the change is good and neccessary.  i remembered how previous new years` eves were spent and laughed at how i celebrated this one.  it was a day filled with tears and panic but ended in a way that words cannot describe, the memory of that night will be remembered and the story will be told for years to come.

the real things haven`t changed.  it is still best to be honest and truthful; to make the most of what we have; to be happy with simple pleasures; and have courage when things go wrong.
